The Sullivan-Clinton expedition was not one of the most glorious episodes in the American Revolution. Essentially it was a mission to destroy the crops and dwelling places of the Iroquois in central New York. Gen. Clinton took his troops down the Susqehanna from its source in x, while Gen. Sullivan, the overall commander, took his troops up the Susquehanna from Pennsylvania. They met, fought a battle at Newtown east of Elmira and then went north to the top of the Finger Lakes.
The expedition is interesting from two points:
- did Captain John Rippey participate in the expedition?
- was the expedition the source of the information which caused the Rippeys, the McIntyres, and others to move north from York county to the Geneva area?
The answers appear to be "no", and "yes".
